Sharon lost her son to cancer and became a grandparent raising her grandson (George) at the same time. Due to neglect and abuse, George’s mom’s parental rights had been terminated early on in his life. This new family structure for both Sharon and George, while grieving their loss, led them to seek support and resources through The Matthews House. George and Sharon joined The Matthews House family several years ago. As a grandparent raising her grandson, Sharon was jolted back into the parenting role and was seeking help with setting boundaries and her relationships, while George was needing help with social and emotional support and regulation within his school and peer interactions. As you can imagine, the level of stress within the family was high.
Sharon has been able to gain the resources and supports she has been seeking through our Community Life Centers and Parent Cafes. George has utilized our Homework Helpers Program and Experiential Education activities including backpacking trips and Human Hangouts.
Sharon and George continue to build their resiliency and strengthening their family structure. Our Matthews House staff will continue to walk alongside Sharon and George as they walk their journey, just as we do with hundreds of youth and families every year.
We ask you to join us in being able to provide ongoing support for families and youth like Sharon and George. We believe no one should be left behind and that community is what defines our mission.
